This House Moves Without me
Installation
2023
Project Lab Residency at
2nd Space, Nambour
‘This House Moves Without Me’ explores the complex interplay between the concept of home, transience, and the enduring nature of self. This installation mimics a ‘moving’ house and serves as a visual narrative directly informed by Shikani’s personal experience of moving 84 times.
The large photograph captures the familiar structure of the suburban family home, one printed image made up of separate A4 pages creating a fragmented appearance. Using a household electric fan, the pages move, the house sways and shivers. Constantly changing, the work is unstable and impermanent.
Installing the pages onto mirrors at ‘2nd Space’ adds a layer of introspection to the work. Viewers not only witness the moving house but also see themselves reflected within the narrative.
‘This House Moves Without Me’ is a reminder that, despite the transient nature of physical structures, the constant structure lies within ourselves. This installation encourages viewers to consider the concept that, even as houses move and change, the essence of "home" remains within, accessible at any moment. I am always home.
